[Q] Unlock the SIM without a code? topic

Searching for the answer but haven't found anything definitive as of yet so...

Is it possible to unlock the SIM without getting the unlock code?

I think I was able to unlock my Samsung Vibrant through rooting in the past. Since then I have been rolling with the Nexus line and I am a bit out of the loop.
